Project 14
WO - Lizette Nin
Curated by Tsering Frykman-Glen.
January 31st – February 28th 2020, Tangent Projects gallery.
"WO is the dissolution of binarism - which did not exist until the whites and the church kidnapped, subdued and enslaved us. It is the journey through images sectioned into volumes, it is the sentimental map that I build in my mind, about the history of us, of everyone.
Sojourner Truth, paving the way for white suffragette feminists, talked about other white realities and privileges, and how they differed from the reality of black people who worked without the right to demand anything.
Una Marson developing the thoughts of Caribbean blackness.
WO is Angela Davis in her cell writing about the differences of white feminism, that has nothing to do with the struggles black women face.
It is Mama Tingo, surpassing the barriers that were hers from birth, and even though the oppressor silenced her demands for justice by murdering her, her legacy of struggle empowered the poor tenant farmers of her country.
It is the journey of all those that do not correspond to the binary, to the white, it is the song that helped my ancestors under the Caribbean sun cutting sugarcane, without fainting. It is the tri-dimensionality of the image, encrypted in each note of that deep cry, of that intense pain, full of helplessness and subjugation.
WO is the tribute to the lives that are lost crossing the Mediterranean, to the souls that Yemanya welcomes and takes to rest together with the Loas - as it was at the beginning when our ancestors walked the African Savannah, untroubled, happy.”
Lizette Nin is a Dominican visual artist, working primarily with photography and alternative printing. She has participated in several collective shows, including Women's Space NYC, Biennale of Caribbean Photography, Photo Image, Universidad Autónoma De Santo Domingo, The Leon Jiménez Cultural Center, Biennale Biennale Salon Bien Artes Santo Domingo. Her fourth solo exhibition, WO, progresses with a new stage of her geometries and volumes to create a pseudo mural of the history of black feminism, of the pain and trauma of the slave, of the black woman, without gender as in the beginning - as it always should have been.
Lizette is currently taking part in MACBA’s Independent Study Programme (PEI) - April 2019 to June 2020. She will be the Tangent Projects Cotangent Invited Resident Artist in August 2020. Lizette has generously agreed to become part of the newly forming Tangent Projects steering group/think tank. She has also been awarded a six month Artist Residency (Sept 2020 – Feb 2021) in La Escocesa, Barcelona.
This exhibition was generously sponsored by The Ministry of Culture of the Dominican Republic.
